Teva Pharmaceuticals USA subsidiary Ivax Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has received approval from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) as of January 26, 2015 to market a generic version of Nexium® (esomeprazole), a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children and adults. Esomeprazole joins a growing list of similar medications that are already available generically, including Prilosec® (omeprazole), Aciphex® (rabeprazole), Prevacid® (lansoprazole), and Protonix® (pantoprazole).

The use of PPI therapy in workers’ compensation and auto no-fault is primarily seen with injured persons utilizing other medications known to cause stomach upset, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). An official launch date statement has yet to be released by Ivax.
