Maker of opioid overdose antidote, Evzio® (naloxone auto-injector), agrees to produce lower cost product after criticism for price increase

After a month of recent discussions with lawmakers and public health advocates over steep price increases of its Evzio® overdose antidote, Kaléo® Inc. announced it has authorized its subsidiary, IJ Therapeutics, to produce an authorized generic version of its naloxone auto-injector for $178 for a kit containing two doses, a small fraction of the $4,100 Evzio price.

The authorized generic will contain the same formulation, design and meet all the same high standards of quality as the brand-name Evzio, but will have a different label. The company will offer the brand-name Evzio to first responders, government agencies, and health departments at the same price as the generic when they purchase directly from Kaléo or an authorized distributor.

Kaléo came under fire for increasing the list price of the life-saving medication from $575 to $4,100 over the course of four years, a stark contrast with Narcan®  Nasal Spray, manufactured by Adapt Pharma®, which costs approximately $150 per package (contains two individually wrapped nasal sprays).

In a recent nationally-televised interview, Kaléo’s president and CEO announced the company would lower the price of Evzio back to the original price of $575 or even less, but only for insurance companies that make it available at an affordable price for at-risk beneficiaries. The new authorized generic is expected to become available in mid-2019.

The two commonly prescribed FDA-approved naloxone products are – Evzio auto-injector and Narcan Nasal Spray - available for the emergency treatment of opioid-related overdose, as manifested by respiratory and/or central nervous system depression. These formulations are designed to be administered by a family member or caregiver to a patient with known or suspected opioid overdoses.

We will continue to monitor for any additional changes and updates as they become available. For more information from Kaléo, please click here.
